A wake, awoke, and a Monday.
'Morning, though arguably, Good Afternoon.
The Year of the Tiger is drawing nigh, and change lurks all around us. While I haven't consulted Joyce's Feng Shui calendar yet, a few people dropping by the bar have told me that it's not the best time to be in that particular business, given the goings-on of the police and Tony Chan lately. But if he was practicing, I'd like to ask him:
"What will Hong Kong do with a special holiday about love coming up on a day with the number 14?"
Ignoring the conundrum of numerology, love is in the air, and I, for one, am looking forward to a few days of unwinding with the upcoming holiday. And a big thank you to everybody who came out and lent some support to Robbin and Tommy (Feb 8 - Feb 14):
- Monday: Gigi Marentette continues to lay out the bar with her emotive ecstatic entrancement of voice in a duet in her Patchwork Mondays, see below (9:30PM)
- Tuesday: For we are not lo - we're on a mission, so. And an open mic for you to perform with. (9:30PM)
- Wednesday: The Soul Crusaders keep organ trio sounds from the 60's in the 10's (9:30PM)
- Thursday: Latin Nights continue with Señores Polanco and Chala as the holidays get going (9:30PM)
- Friday: Swedish bassist Rickard Malmsten joins up with Paolo Levi on sax, Bob Mocarsky on keys, and Jack Greminger on drums (9:30PM)
- Saturday: The Deaf Aides have Pete Scheer bring you a special Valentine's performance and solve the numerological conundrum for a few Lovers and Single's Appreciation Day Goers (10PM)
- Sunday: Fresco is closed for Chinese New Year through Tuesday - have a nice break!
Patchwork and the day of the Moon:
A matter of Trivia:
Last week:
- Q: Well after the earlier 400BC reports of Chinese flying toys described as having the capability of vertical flight and the flying cars of the 抱朴子, what inventor is generally considered the father of the modern helicopter with his plans to build what was referred to as "an aerial screw"?
A: Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci
- Q: This father of modern aviation of both French and Brazilian descent complained in 1904 to his friend Louis Cartier that he could not easily check his pocket watch while in flight, before asking him if he could design anything better that would let him keep his hands on the controls, after which Cartier designed an early wristwatch that he then helped to popularize. Who was this man?
A: Alberto Santos-Dumont
And a pair of new ones:
- Originally forming the company subtitled Malletier à Paris (or the Luggage Maker of Paris), this man traveled about 400km from his birthplace in Jura, France by foot in 1835 before introducing his flattened trunks (allowing easier stacking) and luggage line up utilizing his expertise in the needs of traveling royalty. Who was this Frenchman?
- Though the attribution is frequently contested, Albert Einstein is generally accredited with having described radio transmission by saying, "The wireless telegraph is not difficult to understand. The ordinary telegraph is like a very long cat. You pull the tail in New York, and it meows in Los Angeles. The wireless is the same, only without the cat." On which Scotsman's wave theory (also one of the photo's hung on Einstein's wall) were these wireless transmissions based?

- Open Source Discount Membership rules:
in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any license recognized by the Open Source Initiative" with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
