Fresco NewsThat's not what she said.

It was a dark time in the republic. The mayhem of Chinese New Year behind us and a few days back to work later, and I find myself with the usual post-open-mic-Wednesday-exhaustion has come a day earlier this week. This (recently past) Monday showcased Gigi enrapturing her audience with a completely improvised set of on the spot lyrics with synthetic harmony and the creative accompaniment of Yo Yong Aquino and a little help from Chris Polanco leaving us speechless, and there was no choice but to take out an extra day as a back to back Chill Out session with music running late in the night. I'm sad to see Gigi give up her Monday residency, but I can find small solace in the upcoming steel drum inspired upbeat stylings of Poppa Tunj and his new Monday night group beginning next week.

Bob is also changing things up after this week before he heads to Shanghai, as we'll see (Feb 23 - Feb 28):

  • Tuesday: Open Mic draws us back - come polish up your tunes and experience the difference between technical knowledge and performance know-how (9:30PM)
  • Wednesday: The Soul Crusaders have their last performance before Bob heads up to Shanghai to begin a contract up there, so drop in for your last chance to catch the organ trio sounds from the 60's before it's too late (9:30PM)
  • Thursday: Latin Nights with Polanco and Company keeps augmented 5ths in style, while speaking to your rhythmic shake desire (9:30PM)
  • Friday: The debut performance of Next Level blends reggae born Acid Jazz, Funk, and Latin with Canadian trumpeter Kai Djuric; joining him are Roland Salcedo on keys, Franklin Torres on bass, Tanaka Coñ Jr. on drums, see below (9:30PM)
  • Saturday: Kevin is back at Fresco after almost a two month absence, to bring his blues, R&B and jazz fusion for your listening pleasure; see below (10PM)
  • Sunday: After the last epic Sunday, we're heading back to our regularly scheduled Chill Out session this week, with improv performances from the pros around town (10PM)

Trivia from last week:

  1. Q: Originally forming the company subtitled Malletier à Paris (or the Luggage Maker of Paris), this man traveled about 400km from his birthplace in Jura, France by foot in 1835 before introducing his flattened trunks (allowing easier stacking) and luggage line up utilizing his expertise in the needs of traveling royalty. Who was this Frenchman?
    A: Louis Vuitton
  2. Q: Though the attribution is frequently contested, Albert Einstein is generally accredited with having described radio transmission by saying, "The wireless telegraph is not difficult to understand. The ordinary telegraph is like a very long cat. You pull the tail in New York, and it meows in Los Angeles. The wireless is the same, only without the cat." On which Scotsman's wave theory (also one of the photo's hung on Einstein's wall) were these wireless transmissions based?
    A: James Clerk Maxwell's

in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any license recognized by the Open Source Initiative" with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
