Fresco NewsWorrying after the matters of Uglification and Derision.

Yup, I saw it. People asked me what I thought about it. I gave them a very drawn out "Ok laaaaa". The 3-D was a lot more gimicky than the more subtle delineations of Avatar, and clearly the story was changed quite a bit, but the CG was nice and the acting - generally good. And you might not like her, but I thought the White Queen was pretty nifty.

But if you wanted to know what was happening at Fresco this week instead of what I thought of the new film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, here's the scoop (Mar 8 - Mar 14):

  • Monday: Drummer Tunji brings together his new band, Diving for Air, with Tony Lee on guitar and vocals and Koya Hisakazu on bass (9:30PM)
  • Tuesday: Open Mic - Rock out on your own terms (9:30PM)
  • Wednesday: Mark Peter continues his wide-ranging keyboard, with a blend of smooth and funky jazz (9:30PM)
  • Thursday: Latin Music rebounds with Polanco and crew (9:30PM)
  • Friday: Allen Youngblood takes our stage once more with his special brand of Caribbean jazz, see below (10PM)
  • Saturday: The Ted Lo Trio brings together the man himself, Eugene Pao on guitar, and ah-Hong on bass for a power packed night (10PM)
  • Sunday: Chill Out with the pros as they musically unwind the week (10PM)

A new matter of Trivia:
1. This man voiced his displeasure in mid 2009 over United Airlines' handling of the matter of their baggage handlers smashing his Taylor 710CE guitar (in the same line as my 310CE and Chris' 410CE often featured on Open Mic nights); after being told that nothing was going to happen, he took another guitar to the test and wrote the Internet hit song (and later full triology) "United Breaks Guitars" which received over a million views on YouTube; owner Bob Taylor immediately offered him two guitars to help with his second video. What was his name?

2. Which character, based on a then popular type of Victorian era soup, said about his coursework that it included "Reeling and Writhing, of course, to begin with...and then the different branches of Arithmetic--Ambition, Distraction, Uglification and Derision" from the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?

Take it easy, but take it.[1]

  • Open Source Discount Membership rules:

in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any license recognized by the Open Source Initiative" with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
